HAVE YOU READ: "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen

In the interest of peace and understanding our world and current events, I suggest that EVERYONE reads these books. There is the original edition (1995) and the new edition (2007). Loewen is an avid historian and reviewer of history textbooks. His notes and sources are impeccable in providing verifications and understanding. I discovered his books by accident (via a source in another history book) and since then I've learned Loewen and his books have a huge following. I would like to connect with others who have read them -- or who are willing to get them read. They should be on the desk of every teacher of history, sociology, government, et al, and be well worn from use.

I had only ever had a slight interest in most history until I was around 44 and discovered genealogy. In the next few years I returned to college getting a BSJ with a major in advertising, and minors in history and management. The history professor at Ohio University were the best one could ask for! They were/are avid researchers and keep up-to-date with newly de-classified documents, ETC.! I learned how to determine the value of any history book and have been reading as much as possible. However, I have now also earned an MEd and am working on an EdD. One ultimate goal is to establish an online academy to help disadvataged persons and persons enduring a life-transition, especially with current upheavals in the economy and unemployment. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I feel peace studies should be included so as to help produce a more informed citizenry. I believe that history, especially via Loewen, would also be immensely valuable to adult students.

I "established" a non-profit charity (here in Ohio's Appalachia region) to assist in advocating for social issues and to assist adults who wish to seek additional education or vocational skills. The Angel Power Emporium, Inc. (TAPE) is "TAPE for Cracks in the System." We want to provide enhanced skills that will encourage better success in higher education and/or a career change. We have an account for The Seth Ezekiel Miller Scholarship to give out small scholarships for low-income fathers in higher education. It is our intention to develop many other relevant scholarships, too. However, so far we have received no donations to get started and cannot even afford to do fund raising activities~~~ Ultimately, our activities and academy could extend worldwide -- with much help from other caring people.

I am quite eager to hear from you! Thanks!

I will go read more about your non-profit. How wonderful to hear about it here. I am involved in two non-profits myself, so perhaps we can network a bit about fundraising ideas, which is, of course, the biggest challenge to moving forward.

Best wishes,
CW
