Becoming a vegan is probably one of the most beneficial steps an individual can take to help the planet.
If you do not consume meat or dairy then the animals will not be born to supply that demand. Animals give off so much methane world wide, that is probably why there is a hole in the ozone above New Zealand, because of the concentration of sheep there.
All the grain that is grown to feed the animals could be used to feed us, cutting out the middle man the animal, we are feeding something with the sole purpose of using it to feed ourselves, that in my view seems so wasteful and not at all environmentally friendly, to use twice as many resources to achieve the same goal is madness.
I am an animal lover and the reason I came to think that a vegan diet is the best stemmed from that, but it also makes sense on so many other levels too.
Being a vegetarian is a good start, but when you look into the dairy industry it is full of cruelty, probably far more than the meat industry, because once an animal is dead his pain is over, I think , but I could be wrong I am open minded enough to be enlightened more on that one. Large quantities of milk are only achieved from cows if the calf is taken away from its mother, unless you farm on such a small scale and share the cows milk with her calf leaving him to suckle naturally, but then what do you do with the calf after weaning! Eat him I suspect!. The Hare Krishna centre in North London does achieve this though, they use the males to pull ploughs and work their farm. The females go back into the herd presume. The dairy calves that are taken off of their mothers are then bottle fed until they can eat grass. They are then fattened up allowed to grow and go into the food chain. Dairy cows are crossed with beef bulls to breed calves with more meat.
If I had to pick between being born a beef calf or a dairy calf I would choose to be a beef calf at least he gets to spend time with his mother and be in a herd for a time. There is another type of really sad victim in all this too, the calf that is born male and is pure dairy, no body wants him, they are usually killed by the farmers at birth. Most farmers are caring and compassionate people who love their animals so this must be a very hard thing for them to do. Farmers know that most of what they breed will go into the food chain, they seldom send them to the slaughter houses themselves, they get sent to market where others with no emotional input buy them to fatten up for their eventual trip to the slaughter house. This also goes on in horses widely in Europe too.
Eggs and chickens... well that is a whole subject on its own.
