An Open Letter to President Barack Obama (12/12/09)
Dear Mr. President,
Some time ago, I watched you make a brilliant speech about the cycle of racism, and the potential we have to break that cycle. It gave me hope that one day you would speak just as accurately about the cycle of extreme violence and how it can be broken. Will you? When you speak of America's "evil enemies", how come there is no mention of their children? Their children (like their parents) were born into a cycle of fear, leading to hatred, which leads to the sickness often labeled as "evil". How do we break this vicious cycle? How do we reach the children of violent extremists? How do we teach them a new way? If more effort was made to CATCH violent extremists rather than kill them, then wouldn't it set a better example for their (our, all) children? Although force may be necessary in certain situations, how much potential is there to constructively use high tech non-lethal weaponry, rather than lethal force? How much potential is there to educate children and show them examples of former combatants who were able to break the cycle of extreme violence? If more money were spent on providing peace education, rather than building more bombs, then wouldn't we be doing more to break the cycle? If more were done to relieve people of extreme poverty, then wouldn't there be less of the fear and desperation that leads to extreme violence?
Mr. President, millions of peacemakers will continue to study and explore humanity's great potential to evolve beyond the cycle of war. Will you join us?

I applaud your sentiments, Yaron. Money for peacemaking and peace education instead of war making and weaponry would make for a different world, indeed. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) has been a lead proponent for years for the Department of Peace, mentioned by Caitlin. The website to learn more is www.thepeacealliance.org/. As a peace educator, I've seen the value of cultivating compassion in young children's lives. Unfortunately, like the insurance industry, the weapons industry is HUGE and has so many in government beholden to it, as Michael Moore showed in his movie on Columbine. The military industrial (plus prison) complex is alive and unfortunately well. Dismantling it will require enlightenment of the American people in a big way, something we know we can't get from the mainstream media. Let's hope blogs like this will reach people as well as the right wing pundits do!

Thank you,Yaron for heightening the collective consciousness of oneness, and for also encouraging the destruction of those walls that divide and bind our species in ignorance and fear.
Namaste,
Carmina

Yaron! I think that people that are considered evil are just people that have gotten further away from their source is all. We are all one. (I know that you know this and I think i am just agreeing with you here)
Two wrongs don't make a right. Thou shalt not kill. I didn't see any exceptions in those rules. There weren't any ifs ands or butts. When you are mean to someone whether it is physical or mental or just verbal, you are contributing to the violence on earth near and far. Feelings give off vibrations. Those vibrations seek out like vibrations and emerge together to make a larger mass of energy. The same goes with peace and love. I have learned that I need to be more tolerant and loving towards those that push my buttons or seem to be further away from their source. I am not an avid bible reader and I definitely do not like the way it has been interpreted by clergy but it also says in the bible that we must love our enemies. If Obama is a Christian he needs to act more like Christ and less like a Christian. No offense meant to anyone. I just think the sermon on the mount should be read and followed more than it is. Peace to all, I love you all unconditionally without exception!
