131 people, many of them US Veterans get arrested in front of the White House and the major news outlets decide it isn’t news for Americans.

I got back this yesterday morning at 3am from Wash DC where I participated in a civil disobedience with fellow members of Veterans for Peace and citizens who are disgusted in our governments continuing policies in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. It is estimated that 2/3rds of those arrested were US Military Veterans including myself, who is also a veteran police officer. I don’t take lightly violating the law, but when those in power violate our laws and will not respect the will of those whom they govern then extreme, nonviolent, actions must be taken.
Veterans for Peace had asked for a meeting with President Obama to address these concerns, but never received a response, so we took our messages and delivered them to a snow covered White House lawn. One hundred and thirty one of us refused to leave the restricted area without a meeting with the President or being arrested. The latter is what occurred.
I was in good company with Daniel Ellsberg, Ray McGovern, Chris Hedges…and many other dedicated citizens. Chris Hedges’ speech before the action was inspiring.
There are plans for our return in April with hopefully even more veterans and citizens who are determined to get our leaders to listen to the reason of peace.

Peace Celebration with Iraqi & Iranian Children

Iranian and Iraqi youth were the stars at a 24 September ceremony to celebrate peace between their countries. On this date thirty years ago began the eight year Iran‐Iraq war that killed and injured hundreds of thousands of both sides. With a whole generation of orphans wishing to prevent future conflicts, the focus on children at the recent celebration of peace was most
appropriate.
The participating youth met at the Shalamcheh
border crossing, where the heaviest battle of the Iran‐Iraq war took place in 1987. They then
boarded the "Friendship Boat" anchored midway on Arvand River. The waterway forms the southern and most contentious segment of the Iran‐Iraq border. Dispute over navigation rights on Arvand was among the primary causes of the 8 years war.
According to well known Iranian novelist and peace advocate Habib Ahmadzadeh, who co-organized the event, Iraqi counterparts plan peace exchanges like this celebration in future years.
Ahmadzadeh, a native of the border area and a war veteran, believes the Persian Gulf remains volatile. He hopes to help reduce the likelihood of more conflict by healing the scars and erasing the hatreds of the past.
The Tehran Peace Museum was also a co-sponsor of the event.

International Peace Day Dayton Commissioner Nan Whaley

International Peace Day Sept 21 2010 was celebrated in Dayton at the Missing Peace Art Space and the Urban Youth Peace Academy was inaugurated. Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzell provided a proclamation for the event which City Commissioner Nan Whaley read for us and she also cut the ribbon leading to the Academy's new facility at the Art Space. City Commissioner Matt Joseph was also in attendance along with representatives from the Dayton Police Department, Montgomery County Commissioners and Dayton City Schools.
It was a wonderful event that local news chose not to share with the people of the Miami Valley.
