But this is the first time I have seen the clip. And I love it as well.

The first time that I heard this song, I thought it was about wife-beating. And it could stand for that as well. But after several years I heard Suzanne Vega's own version of it in Spanish (I'll look for THAT on YouTube and see if I can upload it here), and realised that it was about child-beating - and this clip, too, makes that clear.
