Regarding the cigarette, I use the cigarette in this role to present the extent to which we will hurt ourselves to impress others or to be like someone we admire for whatever reason. The context of "cigarette smoking" demonstrates how we become consumed and ultimately unconscious in the habit of disregarding our magnificence and the greatness we bring.

For the record, the cigarette is not a tobacco cigarette. It's an electronic cigarette that I distribute that smokers are using to quit smoking. You see water vapor, not smoke. ;)
