I'm very distraught over yesterday's one two punch of listening to the clown that sits on MLK's stead giving the state of Wall Street and learning about the death of "the people's historian" Howard Zinn. I need to listen to Pete Seeger's song "Quite Early Morning". It goes like this:
Don't you know it's darkest before the dawn
And it's this thought keeps me moving on
If we could heed these early warnings
The time is now quite early morning
But, how much darker can it get? Supreme court giving democracy to the corporate ruling class like they gave the country to a chimp named W. In Russia there is now neostalinism and we are super friendly to pseudo-socialist China. Seeger's song continues:
I know that you who hear my singing
Could make those freedom bells go ringing
By the way, that means only the ones of us that actually try to make progress for peace and justice not the apathetic and much less the greedy and selfish. I want to continue ringing those bells but I'm frustrated by being crippled while in a country that sometimes not so discreetly punishes dissent. But alas, Seeger's masterpiece continues:
And so keep on while we live
Until we have no, no more to give
And when these fingers can strum no longer
Hand the old banjo to young ones stronger
Well, I'm hurt and not a young one but if I can get better I will go on. Because us tortured souls can't give up for it means we die inside. So you see it's impossible for me to hide away from progress behind a wall of gluttonous consumption and ignorant apathy. So I'll continue to listen to one of my favorites songs knowing that it was made for me and people of my ilk. That make me feel better. And it ends like this:
So though it's darkest before the dawn
These thoughts keep us moving on
Through all this world of joy and sorrow
We still can have singing tomorrows
Well here is hoping that some of you may wake up and join the good fight for a more perfect union. Remember, disconnect from mindless television and connect with the promise that is America. Though to those of you the current dog eat dog atmosphere has not bitten yet superficially it does not seem like it, the fight to get out of our current mess is gonna be a long and hard one. What some have called "the unspeakable" have and will continue to dig their heels in the absence of an American spine. Bur, like Langston Hughes wrote:
O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath --
America will be!
