A world sans frontiers where man works for the welfare of man
should be the ultimate aim of humanity itself
While such is a tall order, it is not impossible at all.
I believe that the mass media have the capacity to play a leading role in attaining a world of peace through responsible mass communications.
“In 1945, the United Nations put a premium in its charter the purpose of maintaining international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective and collective measures for prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of peace.”
But what do we have today? War in strategic places of the world! So that the pages of print, the airwaves, the television and computer screens are also filled with stories about war. For war makes news because of the interest it evokes among readers and viewers. The media also focus on and even sensationalize conflict because they believe that it is what people want.
As a future mass media professional, I stand to end this kind of reporting! Mine will be the promotion of world peace through responsible mass communications.
First, I will act as model on-screen and off-screen in radiating peaceful existence with my family, community and workplace.
Second, I will focus my reporting on the need to address poverty in the Third world countries where people are getting hungry each day.
Third, I will put premium on reporting the positive side of the news, one that brings hope to those who may have lost it.
Finally, I will rally my colleagues to use responsible mass communications to help end war and achieve a peaceful world.
Come and join me as put forward my learning about responsible mass communications and the power it brings. From the classrooms and production studios of my college, I bring to you my advocacy in promoting world peace through responsible mass communications.
