Madagascar, a former french colony until 1960, is currently going through a political crisis since last January. The current president Marc Ravalomanana is in conflict with the previous mayor of the capital city Antananarivo, Andry Rajoelina.
The mayor initially wanted to denounce the bad political practices of the president. The president, who is a self mademan and a successful entrepreneur, developed the TIKO group which has companies in every major activities of the country such as oil and food. He also decided to buy a $60 million personal boeing at the beginning of the year for its personal convenience while the population is barely surviving. He finally wanted to give 1/3 of the arable land to a company called Daewoo to grow corn.
The mayor decided to ask the population of the capital city to go on strike and express their frustrations in the street when the president decided to close the mayor's TV station after the lattest showed an interview of the former president, who is now a political refugiee. The mayor lost control of the protest several times leading to looting, a lot of companies burned, a carnage when the population have overstepped a red zone. The mayor, an entrepreneur, has been very confident about all the violence he was creating and the growing insecurity, which makes the population wonder who is behind his movement. The President offered him a position in the government that he refused, which means peace is not yet to come soon.
The international commissions, churches, the army... tried to open the negotiations but no result has been seen, things are going worse everyday and the country is fastly approaching a civil war like in many countries of Africa where natural resources exist and the country then becomes the sitting duck of capitalist countries.
The crisis is strongly related to the lack of education of the population and the high degree of poverty! The population is now fed up of the insecurity and is afraid of going out, can't work, go to school... All the population asks now is the return of peace in the country!!!! As a malagasy citizen out of the country, I share their concerns but we are powerless to change the situation. If we could find a way to get peace back, if you could spread the words so that everybody would hear us and try to help us, you would help us!
PS: For those who haven't watched the movie "blood diamond" yet, I suggest you to do so to have a better understanding of the new exploitation model of African countries!
