Bring Peace to the Homeless Children of America and our National Soul!

Peace is a state of mind; a state of spiritual and physical well being; and for some a state of the conditions in which we find ourselves living. The absence of war does not mean there is Peace! Look around we all see hate, chaos, the misery of poverty - the absence of Peace on so many levels in our nation, in our communities.

President Obama is trying to address the nation’s problems and some of the problems of the least fortunate in the new stimulus package he has put on the table . When the 750 billion plus was on the table for Wall Street Democrats and Republicans rallied to the cause! Now that President Obama wants more funding to address the Health Education and Welfare of the less fortunate Democrat and Republican politicians and Wall Street are complaining and suddenly want to stonewall and reduce spending! They are crying Socialism! Apparently socialism is fine, as long as it benefits Wall Street and their minions!

America's Youngest Outcasts need our voice. Gil Scot-Heron an old friend of mine gave voice in a beautiful song "Save The Children" on his album Pieces Of A Man - RCA RECORDS LABEL Originally released 1971 :

Save The Children

If you're driving through the country on a lazy afternoon
Or you're watching your children playing after school
They seem to be so unaware of I know I know
The things that they soon have to take care of

We got to do something yeah to save the children
Soon it will be their test to try and save the world
Right now they seem to play such a small part of
The things that they soon be right at the heart of

My little Tommy he said he wants to be a fireman
And little Mary she said she got to teach at school
If we know or we say we know about the problems
Why can't we do something to try and solve them

We got to do something yeah to save the children
Soon it will be their test to try and save the world
We got to do something yeah to save the children
To save the children

All grassroots community organizations, activists, social entrepreneurs, Christian, Muslim, Jewish - all faith based community organizations must get behind this issue and let your local, state, and federal representatives know your feelings on how stimulus package funds should also benefit America’s homeless children. How can we have Peace – Peace of mind and soul – knowing so many children are homeless in America! The soul of the nation will remain sick as long as there are homeless children in America wandering the streets, living in squalor or in inadequate overcrowded shelters.

Over 1.5 million American children are homeless each year. The National Center on Family Homelessness is launching a Campaign to End Child Homelessness to galvanize the public and political will to end this national crisis. The mission must be to ensure that not one child in the United States will be homeless for even one day! Wall Street the banks and all of the industries who have powerful lobbyist are being heard and bailed out and funded with billions. What about the children the homeless teenagers? How much of the funding for pork barrel programs politicians are tacking on to the stimulus package is for the poor and homeless children?

“Children without homes are on the frontline of the nation’s economic crisis. These numbers will grow as home foreclosures continue to rise,” said Ellen L. Bassuk, M.D., president of the National Center on Family Homelessness. “Our report underlines the need for every state—as well as the Obama Administration and Congress—to provide equal opportunities for all American children to grow and thrive in the safety and security of their own homes.”

Sample Letter to Member of Congress (provided from Homeless Children of America Org. for convenience), however feel free to use this or draft your own.

Dear [Member of Congress]:
America’s Youngest Outcasts: State Report on Child Homelessness, a new report by the National Center on Family Homelessness, shows [insert state name] ranks [ranking number] out of all 50 states. I urge you to take action today so that every child has a place to call home.
If we fail to act, the consequences are dire: homeless children experience far more hunger, poorer physical and mental health, and fewer educational opportunities than children who have homes. The price homeless children pay is terrible, and it is also high for every taxpayer in our state. From infancy through childhood, homeless children have significantly higher levels of acute and chronic illness. Almost half of homeless children suffer from anxiety and depression; one-third express their distress through aggressive or delinquent behaviors. Staggeringly, less than one in four homeless children graduates from high school.
I urge you to make the goal of ending homelessness for all children a high priority. Please support capitalizing the National House Trust Fund at $10 billion for two years, funding for 400,000 new housing vouchers for $3.6 billion for two years, and providing full funding for Subtitle B of Title VII of the McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act at $210 million to supports homeless children and their families.
Detailed information about America’s Youngest Outcasts: State Report on Child Homelessness can be found at www.HomelessChildrenAmerica.org , including specific federal and state policy recommendations that I ask you to review and consider.
Thank you for making the needs of our most vulnerable children a high priority.
Sincerely,
[name]

Peace and may God bless us for the good that we do, and forgive us for our failure to speak up for the less fortunate and weakest among us. Search your city for homeless children and help them and those with them. Peace
