- In light of President Obama signing a bill to regulate tobacco and a hopeful new wave of awareness regarding tobacco, second-hand smoke and how tobacco is used and represented in the media and movies, we, the organizations below and the creative team of THE PACK would be grateful if you would seriously consider being a small or large SPONSOR for this new powerful thought-provoking event HOLLYWOOD BREATHES FRESH AIR!
So far the event is being supported and sponsored by Techinicolor, The Laemmle Theater in LA, The American Association of Pediatrics, The American Cancer Society, The American Lung Association, and Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy (GASP).
The event will include panel discussions about the issues with producers, directors, actors and the organizations above and the award-winning film THE PACK, which has been presented in over a dozen film festivals this past year. Pronetworks reviewed the film at Hoboken Independent Film Festival and said: "The Pack" is a no-holds barred, stark look at the horrors of tobacco use and nicotine addiction. Compelling and frightening, "The Pack" is inspired by true events and dares to ask questions which remain unanswered to this day. Few films deserve the label "important," and this is one of them.
“In reality, smoking imagery in movies is toxic and deadly to kids who watch movies.” said Reality Check teen Livia Clandorf, United States Delegate at the recent 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Mumbai, India. “What do you think the public would do if toxic chemicals were found in children’s playgrounds?”
Studies conducted by the University of California San Francisco show that smoking in movies is the most powerful pro-tobacco influence on kids today. Studies suggest that up to fifty-two percent of new teen smokers start because of what they have seen on movie screens.
Teens are 16 times more likely to begin smoking if their favorite actors are shown smoking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms that each day more than 3,600 youth will try smoking for the first time and another 1,100 youth smokers will become regular daily smokers.
“Hollywood has a long documented history of promoting the use of tobacco on the big screen. In 2008 alone, PG-13 films delivered 11.7 billion tobacco impressions,” Dr. Glantz said.
“On-screen smoking causes children and adolescents to start smoking," said Barbara Zolty of the World Health Organization (WHO).
We need your support and hope you will join us in our efforts to educate and inspire via the movies and healthy discussion. The event which will mark the release of the film which will help garner press and wider awareness about second-hand smoke and responsible use of tobacco in the movies. Everyone has been touched by tobacco and it's effects and this is an opportunity to bring all perspectives and POVs together, protecting artistic freedom, but raising awareness and a sense of personal responsibility for everyone.
THE PACK stars Lucie Arnaz, Roger Robinson (who just won the Tony Award for Joe Turner Has Come and Gone, Tibor Feldman (The Devil Wears Prada, Enchanted, The International), Elisabeth Moss (Speed the Plow, Girl Interrupted, Madmen), William C. Mitchell (Syriana, Law & Order) et al and bigger than the issues of second-hand smoke and smoking in the movies and media, the film deals dramatically, via the many POVs of it's character's with the issue of personal responsibility.
