Last year we had so much fun for Earth Hour. We lit lots of candles (of course). My 5 year old cousin put on a singing and dancing show, using some toys that light up. It lasted even longer than an hour. Kids can have so much fun with this. She was so excited, she was ready to turn the lights out long before it was time. It was also neat explaining to her why we do it, and later listening to her explain global warming and how it affects the polar bears.
From National Geographic Films, the people who brought you MARCH OF THE PENGUINS and Paramount Classics, ARCTIC TALE is an epic adventure that explores the vast world of the Great North. The film follows the walrus, Seela and the polar bear, Nanu, on their journey from birth to adolescence to maturity and parenthood in the frozen Arctic wilderness. Once a perpetual winter wonderland of snow and ice, the walrus and the polar bear are losing their beautiful icebound world as it melts from underneath them. Narrated by Queen Latifah.
Washington, D.C. will join nearly 1,000 cities around the world in going dark for Earth Hour. The word came last week from the District's Environment Director George Hawkins who said Earth Hour was "a symbolic but important step in showing the world we're serious about the climate." At 8:30 p.m., officials will turn off non-essential lighting on buildings and facilities owned by the city.
A TOTAL OF 44 U.S. CITIES AND TOWNS have now pledged to "turn out" for the largest climate event in history, with more signing up each day.
BUT WHILE THE U.S. IS OFF TO A GOOD START... we've got some major catching up to do with countries much smaller than ours. Australia is the current leader with 144 cities signed up, but France is a close second with 137. Canada, boasting a total population about one-tenth of ours, has 96 cities signed up, while Italy has 77 and Denmark has 58.
Are you a conservationist? Teachers, students and families can learn more about ways to reduce their CO2 footprint and increase their energy efficiency at home and at school. On EarthHourKids.org, take our Earth Hour Power fun and quick quiz and find out your score at EarthHourKids.org/sur.html

Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Tucson, Orlando, and not one, but two Arlingtons—Texas and Virginia! We're anxious to hear from four more Arlingtons in Washington State, Illinois, Tennessee, and Massachusetts!
A complete list of US cities can be found at: www.EarthHourUS.org/map.php.
DANKE SCHOEN: Globally, 1,485 cities are going dark, with Berlin, Germany becoming the latest major European city to sign on to turn out. Earth Hour is now taking place in 9 out of the Top 10 cities in the world by population—Karachi in Pakistan remains the last hold-out.
ALANIS MORISSETTE SUPPORTS "BIGGEST TURN-OFF" IN HISTORY: View the "toenail" ad that has everyone talking.
"TURN OUT, TAKE ACTION" IS MORE THAN JUST A SLOGAN: We need you to let your elected leaders know that you care about the future of our planet and are looking to them to take action in support of climate legislation. VOTE EARTH
YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTEThis year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.
For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.
We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.
VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.
United Nations, 17 March 2009 - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announces that the UN will participate in Earth Hour on 28 March by turning off the lights at its headquarters in NY and at other sites around the world. More than 1,000 cities around the world will participate in the event which will show support for action on climate change and for an agreement in Copenhagen this December.
I thought that same thing last year. And my dad said, well yeah, all unnessesary electricity. And actually I try save as much electricity as possible everyday. Just by doing little things like hang drying clothes, turning the computer off when it's not being used, unplugging electrical appliances that still use power when they are off (microwave, dvd players, ect.)(led's don't use much power at all, but multiplied billions of times it adds up) if possible, turning down water heater a bit, changing all light bulbs to energy efficient(if every household replaced at least one regular light bulb with a Compact Fluorescent one, the pollution prevented would be like taking a million cars off the road.), just to name a few. There are lots of things we can do!
But anyway back to your question. This year I realize, it's symbolic, it's like telling people in power, "hey we need to do something about global warming!" So lights are something everyone can see. Ultimately we need to change the power grid, we need to get our electricity from the sun, wind, ect., not from burning coal. (electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars). So World Wildlife Fund is hoping to reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. Now I don't know if the action of turning off our lights for an hour is the actual vote or if you have to go to the website and sign up.
So I think that's why they only say lights. As far as turning off other stuff that's totally up to you. Last year I said my cousin used toys that lit up & put on a show, well if you really think about it, those toys probably have batteries, which also use electricity. It's really a hard thing to get away from, I think that's why we need people in power to make some serious changes. But it takes us, the people, to say we need change, we want it, and we're willing to do whatever it takes! Obama gives me hope in this area, as in many others!

MORE ICONS ANNOUNCE THEY'LL GO DARK: The Pyramids in Egypt, the Acropolis in Athens, the Broadway Theater District, the Space Needle in Seattle, and the Chrysler Building in New York have come on board over the past few days.
YOKO ONO PLEDGES TO TURN OUT AND TWEETS FOR EARTH HOUR: "Dear Friends, Join EARTH HOUR and turn off your lights at 8.30pm local time for one hour this Sat 28th March. I will be thinking of all of you when I do it here in my apartment. Lots of love, yoko"

Before the rooster crows in most American cities on Saturday morning, lights will already have gone dark in cities like Christchurch, Sydney and Brisbane. By breakfast time on the U.S. East Coast, the cities of Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Singapore and Manila will be celebrating the arrival of the largest global climate event in history. Just before lunchtime in America, the lights will be dimming in Mumbai, Amman and Dubai. And by early afternoon in New York, it will be lights out in Paris, Istanbul, London and Copenhagen.
NEWEST GLOBAL ICONS: The European Union Headquarters in Brussels, St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and the Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing will all go dark for Earth Hour.

Obama plans climate change summit

Mr Obama hopes to create a global consensus on greenhouse emissions
US President Barack Obama has invited figures from the world's 16 major economies to Washington for a meeting on climate change at the end of April.
The event will be the first meeting of what the White House styles "the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate".
It will focus on increasing the supply of clean energy and cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the White House said. It was announced as millions worldwide observed Earth Hour, turning off lights in a protest against climate change.
The Washington meeting is scheduled to take place on 27-28 April and the sessions will culminate in a July meeting in Italy. International agreement
The forum - which will bring together representatives of the 16 major economies and the UN secretary general - is designed to help broker a UN agreement on global warming, the White House said in a statement.
It aims to create dialogue between nations and "help generate the political leadership necessary to achieve a successful outcome at the UN climate change negotiations that will convene this December in Copenhagen", the statement said.
That pact that would take over from the Kyoto Protocol - an international agreement setting targets for industrialised countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions.
my boyfriend and I used Earth Hour to drive around Denver and watch the lights go out. Nice. How about getting city government to turn out unnecessary street lights, etc.
Millions of Americans and people around the world cast a decisive vote for action on climate change by turning off their lights for Earth Hour 2009. The biggest environmental demonstration in history involved 3,937 cities and towns in 88 countries. From an Antarctic research station to the Great Pyramids of Egypt and the Smithsonian Castle in Washington, D.C., iconic landmarks went dark to highlight the threat of climate change. The world's leaders didn't overlook this monumental event: Just days after Earth Hour, the American Clean Energy and Security Act was introduced. This is a major first step toward a strong climate bill that will cut emissions, jumpstart a new clean energy economy, and strengthen the ability of the Obama administration to negotiate a fair and effective global climate deal this December in Copenhagen.

Americans consume more than 2.5 million bottles of water every hour.
Only around 10% are recycled, which means we are throwing away more than $1 billion worth of plastic a year.
Also, plastic water bottles require 1.5 million barrels of oil each year to make.
Zola carries the world's only stainless steel filtered water bottle, made by EcoUsable.
The straw top filter removes up to 99.99% of pollutants for up to 100 gallons of great tasting filtered water.

Don't Leave Home Without Your Reusable Bag
In the U.S. alone, we throw away 100 billion plastic bags each year -- the equivalent of 12 million barrels of oil.
Buy Local and Organic Food
The best organic food is what's grown closest to you. Use Local Harvest : http://www.localharvest.org/ to find farmers' markets, family farms, CSA programs and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area, where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.
Save Our Future From Being Flushed Down the Toilet
Did you know that it takes 90 years to grow a box of tissues? That's right, every time you blow your nose, you are wiping away ancient forests.
And every time you use toilet paper you're flushing old growth trees down the toilet.
Recycled tissue products help protect ancient forests, clean water, and wildlife habitat. It's easier on the Earth to make tissues from paper instead of trees.

I love Earth Hour! I turn off and unplug my electronics when not in use daily, and leave most lights turned off most of the time. :}
No electric lights during the day, unless I'm in a room without any windows -- like my bathroom. Helps save energy, plus I prefer natural light, anyway!
Urge your Senators to Protect the EPA's Ability to Curb Global Warming Pollution
Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) complied with a Supreme Court ruling requiring it to assess the threat of global warming by determining that heat-trapping emissions are pollutants that endanger public health. This move would allow the agency to regulate global warming pollution from power plants and automobiles under the Clean Air Act. But now the Senate is poised to undo this critical progress.
In the next few days, the Senate is expected to vote on a bill that includes amendments that would block the EPA’s ability to fight global warming.
Not only would this action be a huge setback for our efforts to curb climate change and move America toward a clean energy future, but it would also send the wrong message to the world community at a critical moment. This week, several international meetings addressing global warming are taking place in New York and Pittsburgh. After eight years of backpedaling, it’s essential that the United States step up and play a leadership role in pushing for international climate action.
Please urge your senators to signal their support for strong climate action—here and internationally—by protecting the EPA’s ability to curb global warming.

In early September, U.S. Geological Survey researchers flying over the Arctic shorelines of Russia and Alaska spotted a massive herd of walruses congregating on the shore near Icy Cape. Days later, flying over the same spot, they captured dramatic high definition footage of the carcasses of some of the 131 walruses, mostly calves and yearlings. What happened? Find out here http://www.worldwildlife.org/climate/act-for-our-future/walrus.html?enews=enews0910t
These alarming conditions do not just raise concerns about the fate of iconic species such as walruses and polar bears—our own future is at stake. The planet is changing in dangerous and unpredictable ways and the longer we wait to address the climate crisis the costlier it will be. It is critical that the Senate pass a climate bill this year and take an important step forward toward reaching a global agreement in Copenhagen
International Day of Climate Action this Saturday October 24th www.350.org
It looks like the International Day of Climate Action this Saturday October 24th will be the single most widespread day of political action the planet has ever seen - we're closing in on 170 nations, and more than 4,000 rallies and events. There's something happening near you - if you're not sure what, this link will let you find out quickly and easily: http://www.350.org/map.
People in all those cities and towns all around the world will be saying the same thing: science tells us that we can't have more than 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere if we want a planet like the one on which we were born. That sounds complicated, but it isn't - 350 is the bottom line for the Earth.
President Obama is scheduled to give a major climate speech on Friday, and the Senate is set to hold hearings on its global warming bill on Tuesday¹. This will be one of the last best chances to make the support for much stronger efforts unmistakably loud and clear. Your efforts this weekend will be doing double duty helping with the fight in Copenhagen and also on Capitol Hill.
wish I would have known about this sooner, but still wanted to share
Is anyone else noticing more and more chemtrails? This is the 5th day in a row they have been spraying over my town- I can see them from my living room skylight!! I am getting really concerned about this.....
In remarks just after noon (CET, 18 December 2009) at the summit on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark, President Obama said "it’s time for the nations and people of the world to come together behind a common purpose. We must choose action over inaction; the future over the past — with courage and faith, let us meet our responsibility to our people, and to the future of our planet."

WE'RE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU... AND YOUR FRIENDS... AND THEIR FRIENDS: Our planet urgently needs your help. Don't be shy about urging friends, family and any random people you happen to meet to support Earth Hour. All the details for turning out on March 28th at 8:30 pm and becoming part of this historic call for global action on climate change can be found at EarthHourUS.org.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

Drink from tap water, streams, rivers, lakes, and pools - everything but salt water. go here for more info
