Environmentally Safe Clothing

I am wondering about how others feel about the clothes they buy? I have a hard time bringing myself to buy clothes unless they are made from organic cotton, hemp, sustainably grown bamboo or used. Cotton uses approximately 25% of the world's insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides, and defoliants.). The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as "possible," "likely," "probable," or "known" human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin). Cotton pesticides can be extremely hazardous, particularly when poverty prevents users from taking necessary precautions. More about this at http://www.pan-uk.org/pestnews/Issue/pn52/pn52p12.htm

Unfortunately sustainable clothing is hard to come by where I live and also costs much more. So then I think about which has more impact on the environment, buying a cotton shirt locally or ordering an organic one off the internet, which in turn uses a lot of energy to get it to my house. Sometimes it seems like you just can't win. Then I think it's probably not good for me or the global conciousness to worry so much about it. What are your thoughts on the subject?

    Hey yall :)
It's good to see all of the things you mentioned being put into consideration.. I'd also like to do my best to stick with products that are produced in a mindful and harmonious way but you're right.. it's hard to know exactly what has to happen to make certain products available to us so I'm glad we can help each other learn about what's up with what in this group.
The bamboo socks - I have some and they're nice... they're comfy and they seem like they'll last forever so that's good. I don't know anything about the brand but my experience with bamboo products has always been good - hopefully we can find some good bamboo-using producers that do things in a loving kind of way :)

I look forward to finding out more, thanks for sharing!
