western tourists/travelers in Myanmar/Burma?

Hello all...

I anticipate my second visit to India this summer...doing some research for an academic paper. I'd very much like to go to Myanmar/Burma, as well, but have of course heard some disturbing things about the government there. A few questions: is it possible for Americans to get visas and to travel in Myanmar without endorsing/supporting the military junta presently in power? Is travel there dangerous or otherwise ill-advised? Finally, any practical advice that anyone with experience travelling (or living!) in Myanmar would be most warmly welcomed and most gratefully appreciated!
